Touhou Project is a series of vertical bullet hell shooting games created by a single developer, ZUN, under the name Team Shanghai Alice. It began on PC-98 computers in the late 1990s and was revived on Windows in 2002 with The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Set in the hidden land of Gensokyo, its huge cast is almost entirely female, and its permissive stance on fan works has made it one of the most prolific sources of fan art and music.
